Te: Coherence and Inner Authority

The Taoist concept of te—inner integrity and coherence—which, when present, allows natural authority and action without external force.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Te is often translated as 'virtue,' but more precisely means the integrity or coherence that flows from being aligned with the Tao. It's the quality of someone whose inside and outside match, whose words and actions cohere. Procrastination signals a fracture in te: you say you want something, but your actions don't follow; you believe one thing, but feel another; you commit but don't show up. This internal incoherence exhausts you and makes action feel impossible. Rebuilding te—coherence between your values, words, and actions—is central to moving through procrastination. This means examining where you're divided, where your yes doesn't match your no, where you're promising yourself things you don't actually intend to do. When te is restored, when you're integrated around what truly matters, action becomes natural and effortless because you're no longer fighting yourself. Te is the foundation from which wu wei becomes possible.
