The Teacher as Clearwater

How parents and educators should embody wisdom about technology rather than enforce rules from moral authority.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi teaches that the sage's influence is like water—powerful precisely because it's not forceful. The best authority models what's good without preaching. In the technology debate, rules imposed from on-high often fail; adolescents especially resist authoritarian restriction. But a parent who genuinely enjoys offline time, who reads deeply, who is present without phones, who admits technology's real benefits without being captured by it—this adult teaches through being. This concept asks: Can we embody a sane relationship with technology ourselves? Children absorb contradictions ("do as I say, not as I do") and sense inauthenticity. If parents are frantically checking phones while restricting children's use, no rule will carry weight. The path forward isn't better arguments but better models. Adults who demonstrate that deep focus, face-to-face connection, boredom, and contemplation are genuinely good—not just talking points—show children what's possible. This requires the adult's own work on technology relationship, making it a path of cultivation for the whole family.
