Technological Literacy as Inner Stability

Understanding digital wisdom not as information about technology, but as cultivating the inner stability to use it without being used by it.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Debates about technology literacy often focus on skills: coding, digital citizenship, critical media consumption. These matter, but Laozi would recognize a deeper literacy: the inner stability that allows a person to engage with powerful tools without being captured by them. Digital tools are designed to be addictive—algorithms optimized for engagement, notifications engineered to interrupt. Even technically literate children can be enslaved by these mechanisms if their inner foundation is unstable. True technological wisdom emerges from practices that build that foundation: meditation or contemplative quiet that allows the child to notice when they're being manipulated by notifications; practices of real-world connection that remind them technology is a supplement, not a substitute; creative expression that uses tools rather than being used by them. Parents often approach tech literacy defensively—teaching children to protect themselves from dangers. A Taoist approach recognizes that the greatest protection is inner strength. A child grounded in their own creativity, secure in relationships, comfortable with solitude, and clear about their values will naturally make wiser tech choices than one with all the information but no inner foundation. This doesn't mean information doesn't matter, but it suggests that the technology debate's deepest work isn't about rules or facts, but about helping children develop the inner stability from which all wisdom emerges.
