The Technology of Forgetting Mortality: Modern Wu Wei Corruption

Modern technology enables unprecedented denial of death (digital immortality, life-extension obsession); Laozi teaches recognizing and resisting this corruption of wu wei.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi lived in an age where death was visible, unavoidable. Modern technology has created unprecedented ability to forget. We curate digital immortality, pursue life-extension into indefinite timescales, and consume content designed to distract from mortality awareness. This is a corruption of wu wei: rather than flowing with reality, technology enables forcing against it at unprecedented scale. Memento mori becomes radical in this context: it requires deliberately stepping outside the technological denial-systems. You must consciously remember what your devices help you forget. The Stoic practice of contemplating death, when done seriously today, means noticing how much of modern life is structured to avoid this contemplation. Laozi teaches that going against the grain (resisting reality) leads to suffering; modern technology is the ultimate grain-resistance. But the sage recognizes the corruption and practices the discipline of return. Memento mori is no longer passive—it requires active resistance to distraction. By remembering your death despite technology's seduction toward forgetting, you reclaim alignment with reality and with wu wei's deeper meaning: flowing with what is, not what you wish were true.
