Technology as Teacher and Tyrant

Technology becomes either teacher (when used with intention) or tyrant (when it determines use)—the difference lies in who holds agency.

Why It Matters

Laozi taught that the wise ruler governs minimally because people naturally organize themselves when given space. The tyrant controls because they do not trust natural order. Applied to technology, the distinction is agency. A child learning programming through intentional project work develops genuine skill—technology serves the child's evolving purpose. A child scrolling algorithmically-determined content has become servant to technology's purposes. The same tool functions as either teacher or tyrant depending on directional flow: Is the child driving their engagement, or is the engagement driving the child? This seems obvious, yet technological design systematically inverts the relationship. Apps are engineered to generate compulsive use, algorithms predict behavior to match you with content, notifications interrupt autonomy. The child's choice becomes increasingly constrained while feeling increasingly free. Breaking tyranny requires reclaiming agency: children need to encounter technology within clear intentional boundaries they eventually set for themselves. This develops over time through explicit conversations about attention, design psychology, and values. The goal is not technology prohibition but cultivation of what Laozi would call the sage's relationship with tools—using them when needed, setting them down without attachment, and maintaining clear vision of what serves human flourishing versus what merely captures attention.
