Laozi emphasizes flow and natural cycles: day gives way to night, seasons turn, tides ebb and flow. Data centers typically maintain constant maximum capacity regardless of actual demand patterns, wasting enormous energy during predictable low-demand periods. Temporal wisdom means acknowledging and leveraging these cycles. Traffic patterns follow human activity: offices wake at dawn, rest at midnight; seasons shift cooling demands; major events create predictable spikes. Geographic distribution allows energy-efficient load following: sending computation to cooler regions at night, to renewable-energy-rich areas during peak generation, to locations with lower demand during off-peak hours. This echoes Laozi's teaching that the wise ruler moves with the times rather than imposing artificial constraints. Rather than fighting natural rhythms with constant maximum provisioning, data centers can pulse with the world's actual needs, powering down during valleys and expanding during peaks. This reduces average energy consumption while maintaining capability.
