Temporal Flow and Attachment Release

Recognizing that time's constant flow is identical to your life's progression toward death, making non-attachment to moments the key practice.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi teaches that the Tao flows constantly; nothing is static. Time is not a container you move through but the very substance of existence. Your life from birth to death is this flow itself—not something separate from time but made of time. Accepting mortality means accepting temporal flow without resistance. Each moment dissolves into the next; each day becomes past; your present will be memory tomorrow. Rather than grasping to hold moments or rage against their passing, the Taoist practices effortless release. You don't 'let go' through white-knuckle effort; rather, you stop the futile gripping that causes suffering. This parallels memento mori's insight: your resistance to change causes pain, not the change itself. By practicing non-attachment to this moment—knowing you cannot keep it and that losing it is not tragedy—you paradoxically enjoy it more fully. Temporal flow and mortality are not separate problems but one continuous teaching.
