The Ten Thousand Things: Beginning Amid Multiplicity

Taoist understanding that infinite conditions and factors are always already present—you don't need conditions to align, only to begin amid the multiplicity already manifest.

Laozi
Why It Matters

"The ten thousand things" names the vast multiplicity of existence—the infinite particulars that comprise the whole. Laozi teaches that the Tao generates this endless diversity naturally, without planning or control. This abundance perspective transforms the problem of starting before ready: you're not waiting for specific conditions to appear, because infinite conditions are perpetually present right now. The question isn't whether conditions are aligned, but whether you'll move amid the conditions that already exist. Consider: somewhere nearby is someone with exactly the expertise you need; somewhere in your experience is the relevant knowledge; somewhere in your network are the collaborators or customers; somewhere in the world are resources you could access. The ten thousand things are already manifest. Starting before ready means stopping your search for the perfect narrow set of conditions and instead beginning to work with the abundant conditions already surrounding you. Rather than needing less obstacles or more advantages, you simply acknowledge the ten thousand factors present and start moving. This shifts waiting from a practical problem into a psychological habit—the abundance is here; the question becomes only whether you'll engage with what already is.
