Tong: The Unbroken Passage of Time

Tong—passage or connection—describes ancestral time as a single unbroken flow where past, present, and future breathe as one organism.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi teaches that linear time is a useful fiction that obscures deeper reality: tong, the passage through which all moments connect. Ancestral time operates not as a sequence of events but as a living continuity where your ancestor's breath becomes your breath, their struggle becomes your challenge. This is not mystical but neurological, psychological, and energetic—trauma passes through lineages; gifts accumulate across generations. Tong reveals that 'then' and 'now' are separated only by our perception. By recognizing tong through wu wei meditation and observation, we cease to treat the past as finished and begin to see it as a present teacher. The ancestor's journey is not behind us; it moves through us in real time.
