The Uncarved Block: Authenticity Versus Curation

Returning to your pu (uncarved simplicity) as antidote to the exhaustion of constant self-curation.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi valued pu—the uncarved block—representing original simplicity before endless shaping and refinement. Digital platforms demand the opposite: endless carving of your image, constant curation, perpetual refinement of your brand. FOMO feeds on this: the belief that your uncarved self is insufficient, that you must always be shaping, improving, presenting a more compelling version. This perpetual carving is exhausting. The Taoist response is radical: return to your uncarved state. This doesn't mean abandoning all presentation but recognizing that your greatest power lies in your simplicity, not your complexity. What if your authentic self—unfiltered, unoptimized, genuinely ordinary—is actually what people hunger for? The practice involves gradually posting less, refining less, curating less. Letting your actual life, actual thoughts, actual face appear without enhancement. This terrifies the anxiety-driven mind, yet it's liberating. When you stop carving, you stop the constant self-judgment. FOMO dissolves when you're no longer competing with your own idealized image.
