Returning to original simplicity by stripping away roles, identities, and achievements that won't survive our death.
The Uncarved Block (Pu) symbolizes original potential, unmarked by society's expectations and carved by culture. Laozi teaches that civilization carves away our natural state through rules, roles, and acquisitions. Memento mori offers a radical clarification: death will unmake all carved identities. You will not die as your title, your bank account, your reputation, or your resume. These are temporary carvings. By contemplating mortality, we practice pre-mortification—removing the carvings willingly, now, while alive. What remains when all identities are stripped? Often, confusion; then, gradually, peace. The Stoic and Taoist both ask: what is essential? What is you without the carving? This concept invites practice: imagine your death and notice what falls away as insignificant. What you mourn losing reveals your attachments. What you feel indifferent to suggests true irrelevance. The uncarved block before death is wholeness recovered: plain, natural, sufficient.
