Prioritizing basic biological needs—sleep, movement, real food—as the essential foundation before advanced longevity technologies.
Laozi's metaphor of the uncarved block (pu) describes wholeness before specialization and fragmentation. Applied to longevity, this means: before pursuing genetic therapies, senolytics, or biohacking protocols, perfect the fundamentals that require no technology. Sleep 7-9 hours in darkness. Move your body daily in varied patterns. Eat whole foods your ancestors recognized. Maintain close human relationships. These are the uncarved block of longevity. Many people skip this foundation to chase advanced interventions, achieving only marginal gains at high cost. Laozi would say such pursuit misses the obvious. The deepest life extension comes from restoring what modern life has damaged: contact with natural cycles, physical competence, digestive health, and social belonging. Advanced longevity technologies amplify these basics but cannot substitute for them; the foundation must be sound first.
