Return to original nature before social conditioning; discover authentic purpose stripped of mortality-denial and ego-building.
The Uncarved Block (pu) represents original wholeness before society carves away authenticity. Most people, facing mortality, grasp for legacy, achievement, and immortal recognition—but these are carvings imposed by social conditioning. Laozi suggests returning to the block: What did you want before you learned to want approval? What brings simple joy without requiring future vindication? Memento mori often leads to frantic achievement; Taoist memento mori leads to simplification. You will die whether you build monuments or tend a garden. This realization frees you to ask: what activity feels intrinsically complete? What relationships need no future justification? By peeling away conditioned desires, you align with what Taoists call your 'original nature.' Death stops being a thief stealing your plans and becomes a mirror showing what was always your true measure. Purpose emerges not from denial of mortality but from honest alignment with it.
