Returning to the Uncarved Block

Laozi's concept of the uncarved block (pu) shows how social media carves away authentic self, and how restoration begins with simplicity.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The uncarved block (pu) represents natural, undifferentiated potential—the self before it is shaped by expectations, roles, and external demands. Laozi taught that returning to this simplicity is the path to harmony. Social media is the master carver: it shapes us into curated personas, fragments our attention into competing identities, and carves away the quiet authenticity underneath. Each platform demands a different version of ourselves, each post a careful sculpting away of complexity and contradiction. Loneliness intensifies because these carved versions cannot truly meet. Restoration requires the counter-movement: unplugging from ceaseless refinement, withdrawing from the pressure to sculpt the perfect image, and remembering the simple, unperformed self beneath the profiles. This isn't about abandoning social media but about protecting the uncarved core—the part of you that exists before and apart from any platform, where genuine solitude and genuine connection become possible again.
