The Uncarved Block of Raw Information

The concept that raw, unfiltered information holds potential that gets lost when shaped by institutional intermediaries.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The 'uncarved block' (pu) in Taoism represents primordial potential—undifferentiated nature containing infinite possibility. Before the printing press, knowledge remained locked within manuscript culture, shaped by scribes and institutions. The printing press released information into something closer to its 'uncarved' state: reproducible, distributable, less mediated by single interpreters. However, modern knowledge democratization faces the inverse problem—overwhelming raw information without the interpretive framework necessary for wisdom. Laozi suggests this is temporary imbalance. The uncarved block principle teaches that crude, distributed information is closer to truth than polished, controlled narrative. Democratized platforms should preserve the roughness of diverse voices rather than smoothing everything into institutional consensus, allowing readers to encounter raw material and form their own understanding.
