The Uncarved Block: Authentic Self

The Taoist concept of pu—the uncarved block—as our natural state before social conditioning, revealing how curation fragments our sense of self.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Pu, the uncarved block, represents our original, undifferentiated nature before society shapes us. Laozi saw this state as perfect and whole; carving the block into elaborate shapes diminishes its essential nature. Social media is a machine for carving: we fragment ourselves into professional personas, lifestyle brands, ideological statements. Each platform demands a different version of us. This constant self-division deepens loneliness because our fragmented selves never feel fully real or fully seen. The Taoist remedy involves reconnecting with pu—the simple, unshapedeness of our authentic nature. This doesn't mean abandoning social media but rather reducing the gap between our inner reality and outer presentation. When we post from our uncarved block rather than from calculated personas, we create space for genuine recognition. Others sense authenticity and respond with their own. This simplification paradoxically creates more meaningful connection than elaborate curation.
