The Name That Cannot Be Named: Unspeakable FOMO

FOMO at its core is nameless anxiety that resists articulation; naming specific fears dissolves the vague dread that keeps you scrolling.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao. This opening teaches that the deepest reality resists language, yet we constantly try to capture it in words. FOMO operates similarly—it's a vague, unspeakable dread that resists articulation, which is precisely what makes it powerful. When you feel the urge to check your phone, the anxiety beneath it is often not 'I'm missing a specific event' but a formless fear. By naming specifically what you fear missing, you expose the irrationality: Are you actually missing something? Is that something worth the anxiety cost? The Taoist practice of returning to the nameless—acknowledging that some of your anxiety cannot be articulated and therefore may be illusory—diminishes its power. The anxiety you cannot speak is anxiety controlling you; naming it, even partially, begins its dissolution.
