Laozi teaches that the most powerful forces operate invisibly: 'The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao.' Platform algorithms function similarly—their stated rules diverge from actual behavior, creating an unknowable force that shapes visibility. Meta's algorithm is presented as meritocratic while operating through obscure patterns; TikTok's algorithm claimed transparency while remaining fundamentally inscrutable. This opacity parallels the Taoist insight that naming and explaining often obscure rather than clarify. Rather than demand full algorithm transparency—an impossible and perhaps undesirable goal—this concept suggests wisdom lies in accepting algorithmic mystery while learning to sense its patterns through careful observation and intuition, as navigators read wind and current. Social media history's sophisticated creators developed this tacit knowledge: understanding not what platforms claim about their systems, but how systems actually function through attentive practice and acceptance of irreducible complexity.
