Neither extreme works: pure immutability prevents improvement; constant change destroys certainty. Wisdom lies in dynamic balance. The best blockchain architectures separate concerns: the ledger's immutability is inviolable, while governance mechanisms permit protocol evolution. This mirrors how ecosystems maintain stability (immutable physical laws) while adapting (evolutionary pressure). Understanding this yin-yang prevents false choices between stagnation and chaos. The tension itself is healthy, not a problem to solve. Protocols that acknowledge both needs—honoring what must persist and permitting what must grow—achieve the flowing stability Laozi called the Tao.
