Ziran: The Naturalness of Disconnection

Concept that disconnection and boredom are natural states, not failures, and that forced connection violates your original nature.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Ziran, often translated as 'naturalness' or 'spontaneity,' points to the profound insight that your original nature includes periods of disconnection, boredom, and solitude. FOMO positions these states as problems to be solved through connection, but the Taoist view recognizes them as necessary and natural. Boredom is not a symptom of missed opportunities but a sign that your nervous system is recovering, your mind is settling, and genuine creativity is beginning to germinate. When you sit without stimulation, anxiety surfaces—but it is healing anxiety, not dysfunction. Digital platforms exploit the discomfort of these natural states by offering endless distraction, training you to see disconnection as unnatural and abnormal. Recovery means surrendering to ziran: allowing yourself to be unstimulated, uncheckable, and offline without guilt or urgency. Your natural state includes gaps and silences. In these gaps, FOMO cannot survive because you are not comparing yourself against a stream—you are simply being, which is the ultimate Taoist goal.
