Antarbhava—The Inner Dwelling

A meditative practice of internalizing the beloved's presence so that internal connection deepens as external time becomes limited.

Why It Matters

Antarbhava refers to dwelling inwardly, creating an inner temple or sanctuary where the beloved's presence is cultivated through meditation and remembrance. Mirabai's entire practice can be understood as antarbhava—she created an inner realm where Krishna lived fully in her heart, independent of external circumstance. For anticipatory grief, this practice becomes increasingly valuable as time with someone contracts. Antarbhava invites you to consciously internalize the person: their speech patterns, their laughter, their values, their way of seeing. You might meditate on their face, recall conversations in detail, imagine conversations you still wish to have. This is not about denial or creating delusion, but about deepening the inner imprint so that after physical death, you carry their presence forward. The practice acknowledges that the deepest relationship with another person is always ultimately internal—based on how we hold them in our hearts and minds. By cultivating antarbhava now, you strengthen the inner bond that will sustain you through and beyond their death.
