Anvaya: The Thread Connecting All Losses

Anvaya is the underlying continuity and connection that links all experiences of grief, allowing individual loss to connect with universal human suffering and healing.

Why It Matters

Anvaya, meaning 'connection' or 'sequence,' refers to the continuous thread of meaning that flows through apparent separations. In bhakti, it's the sense that all losses and longings are expressions of one fundamental separation from the divine source. Mirabai's personal griefs—her husband's death, her family's rejection, her longing for Krishna—were understood as facets of a universal human experience of yearning and separation. When you work creatively with grief, anvaya helps you recognize that your particular loss is not isolated but part of a larger pattern of human experience. This perspective paradoxically both normalizes grief (you are not alone) and sanctifies it (your loss participates in something larger). Creating work that honors this anvaya—whether through addressing universal themes, creating community through shared witnessing, or building bridges across individual griefs—transforms solitary pain into collective meaning-making and healing.
