Anvaya: Unity Within Diversity

The principle of anvaya—interconnection and continuity beneath apparent difference—allows us to recognize divine presence in all traditions simultaneously.

Why It Matters

Anvaya, a philosophical principle meaning 'pervasion' or 'inherence,' suggests that one essence flows through all things. For Mirabai, Krishna's presence was not confined to Hindu temples but accessible through any sincere heart, in any language or tradition. This concept provides a framework for unconditional love across traditions: rather than collapse differences or demand conversion, anvaya invites recognition of the One expressed infinitely. In practice, this means listening to another's faith tradition for the love and wisdom it contains, trusting that the ultimate reality both traditions point toward cannot be owned by either. Anvaya teaches humility—my tradition does not contain the whole truth; neither does yours. Instead, we stand together in the mystery, each tradition a unique lens on the infinite. For the examined heart, anvaya prevents both arrogance and relativism. It honors particularity while recognizing universal truth. This allows genuine agape: loving others not because religions are 'all the same,' but because each reveals something precious about love itself.
