Authenticity Over Approval in Relationship Choice

Mirabai's refusal to hide her devotion or conform to propriety models choosing partners based on authentic self-expression rather than social approval.

Why It Matters

Mirabai sang her love publicly, danced in temples, rejected conventions—all terribly inappropriate for a widow in her culture. She refused to perform a socially acceptable self. This authenticity is central to secure attachment. Many people choose partners based on who they think they should be with, then perform a false self within the relationship. Anxious attachment often shape-shifts to please; avoidant attachment hides vulnerability. Mirabai suggests that authentic partnership requires authentic selves. This means: Can I be fully myself with this person, or do I edit my behavior? Do they know my actual values, quirks, and passions, or a curated version? Can I express my real spiritual/philosophical/emotional truth without fear of judgment? Choosing partners who appreciate your authentic self—even your spiritual yearning, your grief, your unconventional values—creates secure attachment. When both partners can be genuinely themselves rather than performing acceptability, trust deepens. The examined heart knows what is authentically true for us; the secure partner both knows and loves that truth.
