Avoidant attachment

Avoidant attachment shows up as a preference for independence, discomfort with intense closeness, and sometimes a sense that needing others is weakness—patterns that can keep someone isolated even within a relationship. The paradox is that the independence feels protective but often leaves an avoidantly-attached person profoundly lonely.
