Mirabai's Krishna was not abstract divinity but intimate presence—felt, longed for, remembered with specific tenderness. She did not love an idea of God but a beloved who was present to her imagination and heart. Civilization, too, can be held as beloved—not as an abstraction to defend or a system to transcend, but as a complex, flawed, beautiful presence that has shaped everything we are. This reorientation allows grief to deepen. We can acknowledge civilization's violence, injustice, and destructiveness while also grieving genuinely—as we would for a complicated beloved who is dying or changing. This prevents the split between those who cling to civilization uncritically and those who dismiss it entirely. Mirabai teaches that love and critique coexist; tenderness and clear sight are not opposites. When we can hold civilization as beloved, we grieve it properly: with full knowledge of its shadow, with genuine sorrow for what it made possible, and with willingness to release it when its time ends.
