Beloved and Lover: Reversing the Power Dynamic

The bhakti principle that the soul is the beloved and the divine is the lover, reframing who has power in attachment and teaching us to receive love fully.

Why It Matters

In traditional bhakti, the human soul is positioned as the beloved—passive, receptive, cherished—while the divine is the active lover pursuing, delighting, and sustaining. This reverses the modern anxiety of "Am I worthy?" or "Will they choose me?" Instead, it asks: Can I receive myself as already chosen? Mirabai embodied this radical receptivity, trusting she was Krishna's beloved. This framework dissolves anxious attachment by shifting the internal narrative from "I must earn love" to "Love seeks me." In romantic partnerships, this doesn't mean passivity but rather a secure confidence in one's inherent worth. When choosing partners, this perspective helps us select those who see us as precious and pursue us with genuine devotion, rather than those toward whom we must prove ourselves. It teaches us to recognize and reject partners who withhold love conditionally.
