The Beloved as Mirror for Civilization

Using the bhakti practice of seeing the divine in the other to recognize civilization's sacredness even in its decline.

Why It Matters

In bhakti, the beloved—Krishna, God, the divine—is seen in all beings and all things. This vision of sacred presence everywhere is a radical act of love and recognition. For anticipatory grief, this practice invites us to see civilization—with all its contradictions, failures, and beauties—as sacred. Not as something to be saved unchanged, but as an expression of human creativity, desire, and longing that deserves our tender recognition. Mirabai saw the divine even in imprisonment; we can see what is sacred in the systems we must let go of, the cultures transforming, the ways of life passing. This does not mean endorsing injustice; it means grieving with full sight, honoring the beauty and ingenuity even as we acknowledge the harm. The beloved as mirror shows us that loss and love are inseparable.
