Bhava: The Heart-State of What Remains Unsaid

Bhava is the emotional devotional state or attitude of the heart; it examines not the words we didn't say, but the heart-state we embodied in the relationship itself.

Why It Matters

Bhava refers to the emotional-spiritual state, the attitude or disposition of the heart. In bhakti practice, the specific words of prayer matter far less than the bhava, the sincere emotional state from which they come. A whispered prayer in true bhava is more powerful than eloquent words spoken with a divided heart. When grieving unsaid words, we can ask: What was my bhava toward this person? What was the true state of my heart when I was with them? Often, the answer is: love, presence, care, respect, vulnerability. These were communicated constantly—through how you listened, how you showed up, where you directed your attention and effort. A child feels their parent's bhava far more than they hear their words. A partner senses the heart-state of their beloved. Mirabai's legacy is not primarily in her words but in the devotional bhava that infused her entire life. Examining your bhava in the relationship may reveal that what truly mattered—love itself—was abundantly expressed.
