The Body as Sacred Witness

Mirabai's dances and physical devotion teach that your body's signals—pain, revulsion, fatigue, joy—are sacred truth-tellers that abuse trains you to ignore.

Why It Matters

Mirabai danced. Her body was the site of her devotion, her ecstasy, her refusal. Emotional abuse often begins with the victim's disconnection from their body. You learn to ignore its signals: the tightness in your chest when your partner enters a room, the exhaustion after emotional labor, the absence of joy or desire. Your body becomes an obstacle to overcome in service of keeping the peace. Mirabai's examined heart includes the body as an oracle. When she danced in ecstasy, her body spoke what words could not. When survivors reconnect with their body's signals—trembling, nausea, flinching, numbness—they recover access to their own truth. Your body knows before your mind does. It knows when you are in danger. It knows when you are loved. It knows when it is time to leave. This concept teaches a practice: notice what your body is telling you. Does your stomach clench when this person speaks? Does your breath shallow? Does your skin feel safe to inhabit? Your body is not lying. It is not being dramatic. It is a sacred witness to what your mind may still be negotiating. Trust it.
