Why It Matters

Mirabai danced. Her devotion was not locked in private prayer but expressed in movement, in song, in public gathering. This embodied, communal approach to emotion offers a corrective to modern isolation of grief and rage. When we internalize the message that anger and sorrow are private problems to manage alone, we increase their potency. Bhakti tradition, by contrast, creates containers for collective emotional expression: kirtan, chanting, movement, music. Our rage and grief are not only personal but also inherited (intergenerational trauma) and collective (shared suffering in community). The practice involves: finding or creating spaces to express these emotions with others—through music, movement, testimony, ritual. This is not wallowing but witnessing and being witnessed. The body holds what the mind cannot process. By moving, sounding, and gathering with others, we begin to metabolize rage and grief at a somatic level. For those isolated by shame or trauma, this framework offers permission to step out of silence, to find community containers, to let the body teach what words cannot.
