The Courage to Choose Wrongly

Mirabai's willingness to defy family and society for her choice reveals that secure attachment requires accepting the risk of error and social consequence.

Why It Matters

Mirabai chose devotion to Krishna knowing her family would reject her, society would condemn her, and her choice would isolate her. She was willing to be wrong, or at least to choose in a way that others deemed wrong. Modern attachment anxiety often stems from the paralyzing need to choose 'correctly'—to find the perfect partner, to avoid mistakes, to maintain social approval. This prevents genuine choosing. Secure attachment requires what Mirabai modeled: the courage to choose your own way, knowing others may judge it, you may be wrong, and the choice carries real consequences. This doesn't mean recklessness; Mirabai's choice was deliberate and examined. But it does mean accepting that authentic partnership requires choosing from your own truth rather than from external validation. The paradox: when we're paralyzed by the need to choose perfectly, we often choose anxiously—picking partners who seem safe or acceptable rather than those we genuinely love. Mirabai's example suggests that secure attachment emerges when we're willing to choose badly by others' standards if it aligns with our examined heart.
