The Courage to Love Openly

Mirabai's public devotion defied patriarchal restriction; this framework examines how we can communicate love despite fear of judgment or rejection.

Why It Matters

In Mirabai's time, a high-caste woman was not supposed to love publicly, passionately, or outside prescribed bounds. Yet she loved openly anyway, accepting social ostracism and risk. Her courage was not recklessness but clear-eyed choice: she valued authentic love-expression over social safety. Most of us face similar calculations, albeit in different form. We fear rejection, judgment, or abandonment if we love too openly. We edit ourselves, revealing only portions of our devotion, protecting ourselves through restraint. Yet this protection also prevents connection. Mirabai's courage teaches that love-communication requires risk—the willingness to be fully seen, to say 'I love you' without guarantee of return, to express need despite vulnerability to disappointment. This doesn't mean abandoning healthy boundaries but rather recognizing that authentic love-communication is inherently brave. We must choose again and again to speak our truth, to show up with open hearts, knowing rejection is possible. Mirabai's life testifies that this courage creates freedom, even when the world responds with censure.
