Mirabai's devotional detachment from whether Krishna returned her love reveals how secure attachment requires releasing outcome-based control and choosing commitment anyway.
Mirabai loved Krishna without guarantee of reciprocation, without knowing if her devotion would be returned or recognized. Yet she loved with complete commitment anyway. This paradox—detached from outcome, committed to love—represents spiritual maturity in attachment. Many anxious attachers cling to partners partly to control the outcome (securing permanent presence). Avoidant attachers maintain distance to control outcomes (preventing abandonment). Both strategies stem from the illusion that we can guarantee a particular relational outcome through our behavior. Mirabai's teaching suggests release of this illusion while maintaining profound commitment. You cannot control whether your partner will stay, grow, or love you perfectly. You can only control your own choice to show up with integrity, presence, and genuine care. This distinction is liberating: secure attachment means loving authentically without needing to control the other person's response. It means being willing to end relationships that aren't working while fully committing to those that are. Love becomes a practice of freedom rather than a strategy for safety.
