Devotion Beyond Possession

A relational stance that loves without needing to own or control, maintaining both deep attachment and respect for otherness.

Why It Matters

Mirabai loved Krishna—yet famously refused to see their relationship as exclusive or possessive. Her devotion was radical surrender, not grasping. This reframes what love means in autonomy and togetherness: we can be deeply devoted without demanding ownership. Modern relationships often confuse intimacy with possession—expecting partners to think, feel, and choose as we wish. Devotion beyond possession is the opposite: I am fully invested in your wellbeing and our connection, yet I honor your separateness and freedom. This dissolves false dichotomies. You don't have to choose between autonomy and togetherness; you practice both simultaneously. Mirabai's model shows that the deepest bonds are those where each person remains fully themselves, fully free, yet fully present. Such devotion strengthens both the individual and the relationship.
