Devotion Beyond Reciprocity

The paradoxical bhakti practice of loving without guarantee of return, which teaches discernment about when to stay and when to leave with integrity.

Mira
Why It Matters

One of Mirabai's most radical teachings is that devotion need not depend on the beloved's reciprocal love or even their reliability. She loved Krishna despite (and sometimes because of) his apparent indifference. This doesn't mean accepting mistreatment, but it means distinguishing between love as an act of the self's integrity and love as a transaction expecting return. For relationships broken by affairs and betrayal, this concept cuts both ways: For the betrayed, it asks whether you can continue loving (whether staying or leaving) as an expression of your own values rather than as payment for being hurt. For the betrayer, it suggests that real love requires serving the beloved's wholeness, not just your own gratification. Devotion beyond reciprocity means choosing integrity over score-keeping, yet it also means recognizing when continuing to give becomes complicity with harm.
