Devotion Beyond Reciprocity

Mirabai's one-directional love of an absent deity models how to love fully without guarantees of return, freeing modern relationships from transaction logic.

Why It Matters

Mirabai loved Krishna with absolute devotion despite having no assurance of return, no guarantee he loved her back. This shatters the modern transactional model of love: I invest in you if you invest in me equally; my vulnerability depends on your reciprocal vulnerability. This framework leaves relationships fragile and conditional. Mirabai shows that wholehearted love—in eros, philia, and storge alike—frees us when we release the need for symmetry. This doesn't mean tolerating abuse or one-directional emotional labor; rather, it means distinguishing between necessary boundaries and the fear-driven demand for perfect reciprocity. Some relationships naturally have asymmetries: parental love for children, love for mentors, love for the ill or struggling. When we practice devotion that doesn't depend on return, we paradoxically become more free, more generous, and more present. We love because we value the beloved, not because they validate us. This transforms modern eros from a marketplace of emotional exchange into something more sacred and sustainable. Paradoxically, people respond more deeply when they feel truly seen rather than transactionally invested in.
