Devotion Beyond Reciprocity

Mirabai loved Krishna—a love that was unreturned in conventional ways, unguaranteed, uncontained by logic or social approval. This devotion beyond reciprocity is essential for anticipatory grief: we must learn to care for the world, for knowledge, for relationships without the promise of redemption or success. Civilization may not survive; ecosystems may not recover. Yet Mirabai teaches that love's value is intrinsic, not instrumental. We can work to preserve, to heal, to build resilience not because we believe in victory but because the act itself is sacred. This separates authentic devotion from spiritual bypassing: we grieve precisely because we love without false hope. Devotion becomes both anchor and freedom—we are bound to what matters, yet liberated from needing specific outcomes.
