Instead of clinging to who you were or grasping at who you'll become, bhakti teaches devotion to the self still forming, the stranger you're becoming.
Mirabai didn't know who she would become when she stepped away from her palace—only that she had to follow her longing. The concept of devotion to the unknown self invites you to hold your emerging identity with the same tenderness she held her relationship with Krishna: with faith, not certainty. Grief for lost identity often gets stuck because we're mourning the known while fearing the unknown. Bhakti offers a third option: devote yourself to becoming, to the unfolding, to the self you cannot yet see. This is not spiritual bypassing or toxic positivity. It's a practice of trust in the midst of loss. It means saying: I don't know who I am becoming, but I will meet that person with my whole heart when she arrives.
