Devotion Without Demand

Love given freely, without expectation of return or reciprocal behavior, paradoxically creates the healthiest relational boundaries.

Why It Matters

Mirabai loved Krishna with no guarantee of response, no contract, no deal. This unconditional devotion might seem like codependency to modern ears, yet it freed her completely from manipulation and resentment. She could not demand Krishna change, appear, or validate her. This surrender of control became her greatest strength. In relationships with other humans, devotion without demand means: I love you, and I also honor my own needs. I am devoted to your growth, and I do not sacrifice my integrity for it. I offer my care freely, not as currency for your affection. This stance paradoxically creates firmer boundaries because they arise from wholeness, not from fear of loss. Mirabai did not cling to Krishna; she served him. And in that service, she became untouchable—no one could diminish her or make her small. For modern lovers, this means distinguishing between loving someone and needing them to be different, or needing them to return love in a particular form.
