Devotion Without Dependency

Mirabai loved Krishna entirely yet maintained spiritual autonomy; this model shows how to love partners fully without losing yourself.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's love was total, yet she never became dependent on Krishna's validation or presence for her spiritual worth or sense of self. This distinction—between devotion and dependency—is crucial for secure attachment. Dependency means your sense of self, safety, and value fluctuate with another's mood, availability, or approval. Devotion means choosing, again and again, to love and prioritize someone while remaining rooted in your own integrity. In partner selection, this translates to asking: Can I love this person AND maintain my own practices, friendships, goals, and inner life? Do I dissolve when they're distant, or do I remain whole? Mirabai's examined heart maintained a relationship with the divine regardless of circumstances—it was unconditional but not dependent. She didn't need Krishna to respond for her love to be real. Applied to human partnership, this suggests secure attachment: you choose to be devoted to your partner, but your fundamental wholeness doesn't rest on their love or availability. This paradoxically makes love stronger, not weaker.
