Devotion Without Dependency

A practice of offering deep love and commitment while maintaining your own ground, agency, and capacity for inner fulfillment.

Why It Matters

Mirabai loved Krishna completely yet did not depend on his presence or response for her wholeness. She sang to him in public and in solitude, in his presence and his apparent absence. This is devotion without dependency—the opposite of both avoidant detachment and anxious clinging. In attachment work, this distinction is crucial. Dependency arises when you believe someone else is responsible for your well-being, happiness, or self-worth. Devotion is the conscious choice to love and offer yourself to another. Mirabai modeled devotion: she prioritized her relationship with Krishna above social standing, family approval, and safety. Yet she did not crumble when these were lost; her well-being was not contingent on external validation. In your romantic relationships, this means: invest deeply and show up fully, while simultaneously maintaining your own practices, relationships, and inner life. Your partner is precious and not your source. This paradoxical stance—both completely committed and completely free—creates the foundation for secure, generative love.
