Devotion Without Expectation

Cultivate committed love that releases the demand for reciprocation, transforming anxious attachment's core fear of unequal investment.

Why It Matters

Mirabai loved Krishna with complete devotion while holding no expectation that he would love her in return, validate her sacrifice, or acknowledge her worth. This radical unconditional devotion—what bhakti calls 'nishkama bhakti' or actionless devotion—stands as an antidote to the anxious attachment pattern of seeking reassurance and reciprocation. Anxious attachment typically involves a hidden contract: I will love you this much if you prove you love me equally; I will be faithful if you guarantee I won't be abandoned. This conditional devotion creates constant vigilance for signs of reciprocation or betrayal. Mirabai's model suggests a different possibility: What if you could commit to a partner, invest in the relationship, and express love generously without requiring proof that your love is returned in equal measure? This doesn't mean tolerating abuse or one-sided relationships; rather, it means releasing the anxious monitoring and scorekeeping that poisons secure bonding. You love because love is what you do, not because you're guaranteed a specific return. This paradoxically creates more secure attachment, because you're no longer held hostage by the other person's responses. Your devotion becomes a choice, not a compulsion.
