Devotion Without Possession

A framework for loving public figures and honoring the lost without claiming ownership of their legacy or story.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's love for Krishna was fierce yet surrendered—she sought union with the divine, not possession or control. When we mourn public figures collectively, we often oscillate between idealization and the need to possess their narrative, their meaning, their legacy. Devotion without possession offers another way: to honor someone's life and impact while releasing the need to define or control their story. This means grieving what they meant to us without imposing our interpretation onto their actual life or choices. Mirabai demonstrates this in her poetry—she addresses Krishna directly, knowing he remains utterly free and beyond her grasp. Applied to collective grief, this practice frees us from the exhausting work of defending our interpretation of the deceased or performing loyalty. We can mourn openly while respecting the mystery of who they truly were beyond our projection.
