Devotion Without Possession

A framework for loving fully while releasing the need to own, control, or possess the beloved.

Why It Matters

Mirabai loved Krishna—a divine figure who could never be possessed in conventional terms—with absolute devotion. This distinction is crucial for secure attachment: she could pour her entire being into love while simultaneously accepting that Krishna belonged only to himself. In modern relationships, insecure attachment often conflates love with possession. Anxious partners may seek fusion or total access; avoidant partners may withhold precisely to maintain autonomy. Mirabai's bhakti offers a different model: the beloved is a separate consciousness deserving freedom and dignity. True devotion celebrates the other's independence rather than resenting it. This means loving your partner's growth even when it takes them away from you, supporting their friendships, honoring their private self. It means bringing your full heart while holding your identity lightly. Devotion without possession creates the paradox of secure attachment: the more we release control, the more genuine connection becomes possible, because both partners are present by choice, not compulsion.
