The capacity to distinguish between genuine love (which liberates) and possessive attachment (which binds), crucial for healthy autonomy within togetherness.
Mirabai loved Krishna, and this love expanded her being. She also examined her own tendencies toward clinging, possessiveness, and need-based attachment, and named them in her verse. Bhakti tradition teaches that true love is not the grasping of ego; it is the offering of the heart. Discernment Between Love and Attachment is the ongoing practice of observing your own relationship patterns and asking: Am I loving this person, or am I using them to avoid being alone? Am I offering myself freely, or am I demanding they complete me? Do I want what is best for them, or am I invested in their needing me? This discernment is unglamorous work, but it is essential. Much of what we call love is actually attachment—the ego's way of seeking security through controlling or merging with another. Genuine love, by contrast, is generous and free. It can let go. In the framework of Autonomy and Togetherness, this discernment allows you to love others fiercely while respecting their separateness. It allows you to be close while remaining yourself. It prevents the enmeshment that masquerades as intimacy.
