Internalization of being fully seen and held by a compassionate, non-judgmental presence that rewires how we seek recognition from partners.
At the heart of secure attachment is being truly seen—not for performance or compliance, but for one's essential nature. Mirabai experiences Krishna's gaze as complete recognition: he sees her past, her longing, her contradictions, her fullest self. This internalized sacred witness becomes more reliable than any human mirror. Many insecure attachment patterns involve constant unconscious checking: do you see me? Am I enough? Will you abandon me if you really know me? We scan partners' faces for validation or rejection, remaining in a hypervigilant state. Mirabai teaches that when we feel witnessed by something infinite and unconditional, we no longer desperately need finite human witnesses. This paradoxically makes us healthier partners—we can see others without needing them to see us in return; we can accept their seeing without collapsing or inflating; we can maintain our own sense of okayness regardless of their response. The gaze of the divine witness (which might be meditation, nature, the self, God, or art) becomes the secure base. From there, human partnerships become choices rather than life-or-death needs.
