Embodied Presence Through Dance

Mirabai's ecstatic dancing models how embodied presence and emotional expression heal attachment trauma and create relational safety.

Why It Matters

Mirabai danced in public devotional expression—an act considered scandalous and transgressive. Her dancing was not performance but genuine embodiment of spiritual joy and longing. In attachment terms, many people are dissociated from their bodies as a survival mechanism: anxious partners disconnect from their own needs to monitor their partner; avoidant partners numb their vulnerability through intellectualization. Mirabai's dance teaches that secure attachment requires coming home to the body—feeling its sensations, honoring its signals, expressing its truth. When we can be present in our own flesh, we can be present with our partner's flesh and vulnerability. Embodied presence means noticing when your nervous system contracts in fear and when it softens in safety. It means being able to cry, laugh, and desire without shame. For attachment healing, somatic practices—dance, breath work, touch—help rewire the nervous system away from hypervigilance or numbness toward regulated responsiveness. Mirabai's ecstatic embodiment is an invitation to reclaim presence.
