A spectrum model showing how romantic love moves between desire and unconditional giving, with Mirabai's devotion as the agape pole that transforms eros.
Ancient Greek philosophy mapped a spectrum from eros (desire, attraction, personal need) to agape (unconditional, self-giving love). Most modern relationships oscillate between these poles without awareness. Mirabai's bhakti shows what happens when eros encounters agape: the desire doesn't vanish but transfigures. She burned with longing for Krishna, yet her longing dissolved into pure devotion. In modern relationships, this continuum becomes visible in how couples move through passion's seasons. Early eros is intensely personal—your beloved satisfies *you*. Mature love tends toward agape—you find joy in your partner's flourishing independent of what they provide you. The examined heart asks: Where on this spectrum am I? Am I loving selfishly or selflessly? Can I hold both? Mirabai teaches that the answer is neither/nor but both/and: the deepest eros becomes indistinguishable from agape. Desire and devotion merge into freedom.
