Mirabai's central teaching of rigorous self-inquiry provides a daily practice for becoming aware of unconscious attachment patterns and triggers.
The examined heart—continuous self-inquiry into motivation, emotion, and truth—is Mirabai's core practice. She questioned everything: her desires, her fears, her reasons for loving, her attachments to outcome. This wasn't harsh self-judgment but loving investigation. For attachment patterns, the examined heart means regular inquiry: When I feel anxious with my partner, what am I actually afraid of? When I withdraw, what hurt am I protecting? What do I need from them that only I can provide myself? Am I in this relationship from love or from fear? This practice creates the awareness necessary for secure attachment to develop. Unlike avoidance or rumination, examination is gentle, honest, and curious. Over time, the examined heart reveals unconscious patterns inherited from family, culture, and past relationships. From this awareness, new choices become possible. Mirabai's bhakti path shows that devotion to truth—about ourselves, our partners, our relationships—is the highest form of love.
